I have been working hard all this year because I was invited by the Scottish Arts Club to create a show for their Club Room walls. The Club has its home in a beautiful large townhouse in an elegant West End Georgian square, and the present Club Room was the original Drawing Room with floor to ceiling windows. The walls seem huge and I wondered how I would make work large enough to fill them!
In the end I just started making screenprints as experiments, which seemed to increase in number until I realised that my experiments WERE the work and that the work was small. It was a leap of faith to accept that small work could fill large walls.
The title of the show – Intertidal Traces – reveals the subject matter and the fascination I have for what lies at that ever changing point where sea meets sand. Living by the Firth of Forth as I do, every day the shore presents new stories, new patterns in the sand and water, and thoughts of water quality, climate change and restoration work being done for seagrass and oysters.
These are intimate pieces that on close inspection allow the viewer to feel drawn into the tide line and to share my concern for its future well being.
