Intertidal Traces

This body of work is an investigation of the intertidal zone, the coastal environment and the wide range of species dependent on the sea found around the Scottish coasts.

Having been encouraged by mentoring in 2023 from the Society of Scottish Artists, I delved deeper into the ideas I was already exploring with regard to climate change as manifested in the sea. I attended an evening class in marine biology at Edinburgh University, and after much reading on the subject, I became particularly interested in the work being done to re-wild the seas and increase carbon sequestration. This has led me to a study of my home coast of Portobello, Edinburgh and of seaweed, seagrass and oysters in the Firth of Forth and beyond as a way to express my concern for the health of my local coastal ecology.

Mostly these are screen prints on Somerset paper on a small scale. During the process, I found that printing onto tissue paper gave an extra dimension to the fragility of the subject matter. These can be viewed with light from behind or in front, much as light falls through water, or are presented collaged onto canvas boards.
