Sense of Place – Drawing and Painting in Lewis & Harris, 22 – 31 August 2025
I have tutored this experience for many years now, and every year it is different but equally exciting! We combine travelling with your art materials to discover the roots of the Hebrides and the raw beauty of its isolation on the edge of the British Isles, with indoor studio work to develop sketches and ideas further. From two different base locations – Stornoway in Lewis and Tarbert in Harris – we visit different sites, often working en plein air, with indoor alternatives to suit any weather. You will feel a connection to nature as you explore this landscape formed 3,400 million years ago, still sculpted today by wind and rain and human hand.
As we travel to our drawing locations I talk to you about the history and culture of the islands as well as about local plants and poetry so that you can engage better with where you are. Drawing with mixed media in your sketchbook, using graphite, charcoal and ink, along with quick washes of colour from your paints provides a record of your experience and the basis of further work. We work with water-based paint and inks and add elements of collage. The course is suitable for all skills levels.
This trip is fully booked but there is a waiting list on the Wild at Art website. For more information please look here and remember to sign up to Wild at Art’s newsletter to be the amongst the first to know when booking opens for 2026. Or contact me if you have any questions.
“Wonderful company, amazing places to visit, splendidly organised. The lovely Nicky giving inspiration by quoting poems, describing history and fun facts. Guiding us gently into new art experiences and techniques day by day. I loved the experience, the scenery, the group…”
Maja from Holland (2024)
“Sense of Place, an apt description of this workshop. Nicky added to it with the tales and stories she shared with us as we drove through Harris and Lewis. And the poems she read added so much to my experience of place. She’s a wonderful artist and teacher, I wish I had had more time to work with her…I will return! I am going home inspired!”
Tamora from Washington DC
